Oops - forgot to blog!

Darn, I'm really annoyed at myself. I was doing well with all my deadlines then realised the other day that I have not posted in over a week. D'oh! I'll make sure I post another one this week before they start to mark them. I guess it's not too bad because I heard some people in Summer School still haven't even set up their blogs at all. At least whatever grade I end up getting will be based on what I HAVE done and not what I HAVEN'T done!!

Anyway, back to my post... I can't believe Summer School is almost over already! I've got my History and Politics exam on Friday and my Psychology exam a week tomorrow. It seems like ages away but I've learned that the time flies! I would say time flies when you're having fun but let's not stretch it - LOL!

I did most of the reading for the H&P essay that I hadn't done at the time. Most of it - not all. I did wish I had done it all but my brain just felt like it couldn't take in any more. The blog marker was mentioning about how people who just did the handout reading got on and I'm not really sure. I think it was a bit lazy if they did do that. I mean, I never did it ALL but at least I had a go. It's just that in school it was more like that. The reading was hard but I guess you have to trust that lectureres don't make you read things just for the sake of it - even if it feels llike it sometimes!!

It's also hard because I heard sometimes in university you are using the books your teacher (eek, LECTURER, swear I will get the hang of it!) wrote and it might be weird to quite that at them. What I learnt at Summer School, though, is that these people know their stuff iside out and back to front and upside down so they will know if it is relevent or if you are just after brownie points for being a sook! Haha!

oh wow, just reading back my post there and I am starting to get nervous about the exams coming up. it's funny always though, becuase if you are really dreading something and counting the days til it, well there will be days after that too so you can imagine it will pass. And once it does pass there is nothing I can do about it - it's only now I can control how much I can do. but telly is so good this time of year so I have to set my time around that... Hmmmm!

I'll post in a couple of days about how I am getting on anyway. OMG, just remembered these blogs are being marked from THIS WEDNESDAY ON!! Any chance I can just give you a fiver instead, Ms Marker?!?!?!

  1. Better late than never, Holly! (and no, a fiver will not influence the way I assess your blog!)

One of the reasons that we ask students to keep a blog at Summer School is to help you get into the habit of doing study tasks regularly – whether it’s reading, preparing for tutorials, writing assignments etc - and without anyone else reminding you all the time. No student can even start to develop into an independent learner at university unless s/he can actually make her/himself just “sit down and get on with it”, for around 20-25 hours a week. So, you’ve done quite well, Holly, in keeping your blog reasonably up-to-date, and getting assignments in on time. It’s clear that you feel you’ve “taken control”; carry on like this in your first year (and later years) at uni and you will succeed in your studies. Unfortunately, for those who do not self-manage well in first year, research shows that their eventual degree performance is likely to be poor. Your fellow-students who have neglected their blog should be warned!

Talking of self-management, I’m pleased to hear you’re thinking positively about your two exams coming up this week and next; I wonder whether you’re using any interesting revision techniques? Make sure you try a range of revision activities, including new ones, to make full use of your learning capacities.

You’re right - it’s a good idea to post to your blog again before Wednesday (as I shall be assessing the blogs from this Wednesday onwards). Are you looking beyond the end of Summer School, and ahead to university? You’ve briefly mentioned your future at uni a few times, and I’m glad you’re looking forward to it, but you might consider in a little more detail how you will use what you’ve learned at SS: what do you think has been most helpful for you? what kind of challenges do you expect and how will you meet them?

In the meantime you can look forward to Graduation next week: you’ve shown very good reflective skills in your blog, Holly, and if your other assessments are up to this standard you’ll feel a huge sense of achievement and pride when you receive your certificate.
